The Country

China is located in the eastern part of Asia, along the western border of the Pacific Ocean. It extends for a distance of 5,500 km from North (from the Heilongjiang River, north of the River Mohe in Heilongjiang province  to South (to the Zengmu Reef of Nansha archipelago); 5,200 km from East (the confluence of the Heilongjiang and Usulijiang) to West (on the Pamir plateau in Xingjiang).

Most of China's land area is comprised in the temperate climate. The southern part of China is located in the tropical and subtropical area, while the northern part is in the Ice Area. China has a very complex morphology, due to the strong climate differences. From the long winter of Heilongjiang, to the tropical climate that lasts all year round on the island of Hainan, from the eternal spring of the plateau of Yunnan and Guizhou, to the extreme temperature changes in the North- western China, from the cold climate of the' plateau of Qinghai-Tibe, to the hot and dry climate typical of deserts. The complex morphology and the varied climate create differences in the natural landscapes and customs of the inhabitants of this vast Country.

China occupies an area of 9.6 million square kilometres, a quarter of the Asian continent and has a population of over one billion three hundred million people. Such figure represents about one fifth of the world population and makes China the most populous state in the world. It is a young Country in which young life expectancy is 73 years old and residents aged between 15 and 65 years account for about 70% of the whole population. The history of China is the oldest in the world; it dates back more than 5,000 years ago. It can be said that the human presence and the first signs of civilization existed during the first period of the Stone Age. After the first primitive stage in the 21st century B.C. a first form of civilization starts taking life. With the birth of the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC, China entered the feudal era, followed by the Han dynasties (206 BC - 220 AD), Tang (618-917), Song (960-1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911). During this long period of time, China has built a great civilization, which is the foundation of human history. The perfect fusion technique of bronze, the unique technology of working with clay, the Great Wall, the beautiful imperial gardens and residences from different architectural styles, still impress today.

Popular tradition defines that the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar, the cold hard welcomes the spring. On this occasion, the Chinese celebrate happily and solemnly the Spring Festival. The 150th day of the first lunar month celebrates instead Yuanxiao's Day, also called the Feast of Lanterns. According to popular tradition, during the celebrations the Yuanxiao will be eaten (a typical cake made with glutinous rice flour) and families gather. Last, the Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on the 150th day of the eighth lunar month. The People's Republic of China is a socialist state, in which all government offices are from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which, having no formal political opposition, holds an absolute pre-eminence. The legislative power has as its supreme organ the National Assembly of the People, whose 2,989 members are elected every five years by the provinces, by the autonomous regions, by municipalities and by the army.
